Evaluating Truthfulness and Credibility (ETaC)

May 17th 2017 @ 08:00 - May 20th 2017 @ 17:00 CEST

Background Evaluation of Truthfulness and Credibility (ETAC)
This unique course is mainly based on the life work of Dr. Paul Ekman and aims to develop skills in recognizing emotions as a basis for judging truth and lies. Especially in so-called high-stakes situations this provides an advantage. The techniques learned can be useful in the fight against terrorism, but also in job interviews or contract negotiations.

During the course, students are taught to identify hotspots using psychological models. Hotspots are visible when tension occurs between what we think and feel. This is the case when we are not telling the truth. Hotspots are hypotheses to be tested. To identify the hot spots five communication channels are scanned continuously:

  • Facial expressions (sometimes for only a fraction visible);
  • Body language;
  • The use of ones voice;
  • The style in which we speak;
  • The content of what we say

When the truth is not spoken, this becomes visible as a deviation from the baseline. The baseline is the normal behavior of a person in a particular situation. The students learn the above skills, but there is also a lot of attention given to the way the memory works. To analyze the content, students are made acquainted with Criteria-Based Content Analysis (CBCA). This makes it possible to assess the content of a story on credibility. The hotspots are then tested by asking questions, after which a conclusion can be drawn about the truth.

Structure of the course
The three day course is structured as follows:

  • Day 1: Theory and science behind this course
  • Day 2: The skills (mainly the communication channels)
  • Day 3: Practice in the application of the skills learned

The offered material is a balanced mix of plenary sessions, syndicate assignments, observation assignments and individual assignments. The trainers are certified by Paul Ekman and are experienced instructors, but also experienced in the practical application of the subject matter. In addition, the course is unique in the Netherlands. Woodland Emotional Intelligence is the only training institute in the Kingdom of the Netherlands that is certified to offer this course.

Objectives of the course
After attending this course, students are able to interact more intensively, to obtain better information and consider this information in confidence.

After the training students should be able to:

  • know the importance of identifying the baselines and how to do so;
  • identify and evaluate hotspots;
